Announcements for Week of December 13, 2009

Session Meeting: The Session will meet this Tuesday night, December 15, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor for its stated meeting. If you would like to unite with our congregation in membership, please plan to meet with the Session to offer a profession of faith.

Wednesday Nights @ HWPC: We will meet this Wednesday for dinner at 6:15 and our study on Methods of Prayer at 7:00. It will be our last meeting until Jan. 20th due to the holiday and other beginning of the year events.

Christmas Party: Jim and Jane Mitchell will be hosting their annual Christmas party on the evening of December 22nd. Plan on enjoying some soup and bring a fun gift that is silly or serious for our game of Dirty Santa. Previous years' gifts have ranged from Christmas decorations and candy to possum cookbooks and rapping teddy bears. Everyone is welcome to come to this time of fun and fellowship.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service: Don't forget to invite your friends and neighbors to our annual Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 5pm on December 24th. The service is casual, and all are welcome.

Sunday, December 27, 2009: This Sunday will be an exciting one in the life of our congregation. This will be Ministry Focus Sunday, so Pastor Ed will introduce our ministry focus for 2010. We will celebrate the sacrament of The Lord's Supper. We will also close our time capsule for the 200th anniversary celebration of the church. Please submit any photos, letters or other artifacts by Saturday, Dec. 26th.

Announcements for Week of November 29, 2009

Wednesday Nights @ HWPC will resume this week. We will continue our study on methods of prayer. Note that we will have our study through December 16th, after which we will take a break for Christmas.

There will be no Women in the Church meeting in December. In lieu of our meeting, we will enjoy lunch together at Anna Renae's Tea Room on December 12th at 11:30. Meet at Anna Renae's for some yummy food and a good time.

The Session will meet on Tuesday, December 15th at 7:00 in the Fireside Parlor. If you are interested in joining, please plan to attend to give your profession of faith.

We will close our time capsule on the fourth Sunday of December. Please submit any letters, photos or other items to Pastor Ed for the congregation of 2034 to share at the 200th anniversary celebration.

Plan to join us for a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service on Dec. 24th at 5:00.

Announcements for Week of November 22, 2009

There will be no Wednesday Nights @ HWPC this week because of the Thanksgiving holiday. We hope to see you next week.

Come out on Saturday morning, Nov. 28th to participate in our annual "Hanging of the Greens" where we decorate our church grounds for Advent and Christmas. We will begin at 9 am. Feel free to bring any family or friends you may be hosting for the holiday weekend.

Advent Schedule: We will have two special evening services during the Advent season. The first will be our Christmon Lighting Service. It will be this Sunday, November 29th at 6 pm. The second will be a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 5pm on December 24th.

Ladies, don't forget we will be meeting for lunch at Anna Renae's on December 12th at 11:30. Come join us for a time to relax together while we enjoy some good food.

Announcements for Week of November 15, 2009

Ladies, mark your calendars! Instead of our monthly Women in the Church meeting in December, we will be enjoying a Christmas lunch at Anna Renae's Tea Room. All ladies are invited to join us for this time of good food and fellowship on December 12 at 11:30. We have the upstairs room reserved just for us, so make sure you plan to attend.

Session Meeting: The Session will have its stated meeting this Tuesday, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor. If you are interested in uniting with the church in membership, please come to that meeting to meet with the Elders and profess your faith.

Wednesday Nights at HWPC: Our regular Wednesday night schedule will take a break next week for Thanksgiving, but we will meet this week. Pastor Ed is beginning a new series on methods of prayer. Come join us at 6:15 for dinner and stay for the study at 7:00.

Hanging of the Greens: On Saturday, November 28th we will have the annual "Hanging of the Greens" where we decorate our church grounds for Advent and Christmas. Please join us at 9 am if you are able.

Announcements for October, 2009

  • Wednesday Nights @HWPC: Every Wednesday in October will include our regular Wednesday night activities, which include a WIC prayer meeting, fellowship supper, and adult Bible study. Join us if you are able!
  • Sunday School: If you haven't been to Sunday School in a while, we've made some recent changes that may be of interest to you! There have been some adjustments to our children's classes, and the adult class is now studying the book of Ephesians, with discussion led by Ruling Elder Lou Cardamone. Come join us!
  • Presbytery: Pastor Ed will attend the regular meeting of our Presbytery on Tuesday, October 6th. Please be in prayer for the Presbytery as they attend to the care, oversight, and business of this regional portion of our denomination.
  • Work Day: a work day has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 10th, at 9am. Thanks in advance for your help!
  • October Carry-In: The "Carry-In" Lunch for October will be on Sunday, Oct. 11th, immediately after worship. If you are able, please plan to join us for this fellowship and food!
    • WIC Meeting: the regular meeting of the Women in the Church (WIC) will be on Tuesday, Oct. 13th, at 7pm in the Parlor. The WIC continues to study Esther: a woman of strength and dignity by Charles R. Swindoll.
    • Evensong: We will continue “experimenting” with an evening worship service with TWO in October: on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, 10/4 and 10/18. The service will begin at 7pm, and will be casual in dress. Come join us if you are able!
  • Session Meeting: The Session will have it's stated meeting for October on Tuesday, October 20th, at 7pm in the Parlor. If you are interested in joining with our congregation in membership, please plan to attend this meeting to offer a profession of faith to the Elders.
  • Communion Sunday: We will celebrate the family meal of Christ, the sacrament of Communion, together on Sunday, October 25th.
  • Spiritual Life Conference: On October 23-25, we will host a Spiritual Life Conference, focusing on the spiritual discipline of prayer. Our speaker will be Prof. Jerram Barrs of Covenant Seminary. For more information, visit: slc.hickorywithepc.org.

Announcements for July 2009

  • July Carry-In: Please plan to stay and join us for our monthly “carry-in” fellowship meal next Sunday, immediately following worship. If you are able, we ask that you bring a dish with enough for your household, plus one or two others. CORRECTION: there will be NO Carry-In for July. Sorry about the mix-up!
    • WIC Meeting: the regular monthly meeting of the Women in the Church (WIC) will NOT meet this month. It will resume in August, on the 11th.
    • Wednesday Nights @HWPC: Our regular Wednesday evening activities are on break now; they will resume on August 5th.
    • Evensong: We will begin “experimenting” with an evening worship service, starting on July 19th and continuing monthly through the rest of the summer on the 3rd Sunday of each month. The service will begin at 7pm, and will be casual in dress. Come join us if you are able!
  • Communion Sunday: We will celebrate the family meal of Christ, the sacrament of Communion, together on Sunday, July 26th.

Announcements for late May/June 2009

  • Stated Session Meeting: The Session will meet for its stated May meeting on Tuesday, May 19th, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor. There is no stated meeting of the Session for June.
  • Work Day: there is a work day scheduled for Saturday, May 23rd, starting at 9am. The purpose of the work day is to set up and decorate for Presbytery (see below). Please plan to participate if you are able.
  • Communion Sundays: On Sunday, May 24th and Sunday, June 28th, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper together.
  • Presbytery: We are hosting the regular May meeting of Covenant Presbytery on Tuesday, May 26th. If you are able, we would encourage you to participate-- either by attending as a guest, or by helping with hospitality (or both!). Please contact Angela Matlock if you are interested in helping.
  • WIC meeting: the monthly meeting of the Women in the Church (WIC) will be on Tuesday, June 9th, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor. The women have been reading Chuck Swindoll’s book Esther together. If you would like a copy of the book, please speak to Jane Mitchell.
  • Wednesday Nights @HWPC: we will take a break from our regular Wednesday Nights schedule over the summer. Our last Wednesday night supper and study will be on June 10. We will resume our activities on August 6th.
  • June Carry-In: Our “carry-in” fellowship meal for June will be on June 14th, the second Sunday. If you are able, please plan to bring enough food for your household plus one or two more people. Please join us whether you are able to bring food or not!
  • General Assembly: Pastor Ed will be out of town for the week of June 15-19, attending the annual General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America. The church offices will be closed for that week. If you should need pastoral care during that week, please contact Lou Cardamone, Roy Jenkins, or Jim Mitchell (Ruling Elder Robert Coursey will be at General Assembly with Pastor Ed).

Announcements for late March/April 2009

  • Congregational Day of Fasting: The Session has called for a day of fasting for Saturday, March 28. For more information about this, see Pastor Ed’s blog post about it.
  • Sunday School has been cancelled for Sunday, March 29; there will be a fellowship breakfast during that time, instead.
  • Holy Week: We will include the following events for this year’s Holy Week:
    • Palm Sunday-- ordinary Sunday Schedule
    • Wednesday Nights @HWPC-- will be cancelled, due to other activities
    • Maundy Thursday-- there will be a special Maundy Thursday service, held jointly with Christ Presbyterian Church of Oakland and St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Cordova. The service will be in the sanctuary at 6pm, and a reception will follow immediately in the Fellowship Hall.
    • Easter Sunrise Service-- 6:30am on the HWPC grounds, weather permitting (in the sanctuary if the weather is poor)
    • Easter Pancake Breakfast--7:30am in the Fellowship Hall
    • Sunday School-- will be cancelled for Easter Sunday
    • 11am Worship-- in the sanctuary
  • April Carry-In: Our regular Carry-In meal for April will be cancelled, since we will have already shared breakfast together earlier that day (Easter Sunday).
  • WIC Monthly Book Study: the Women in the Church (WIC) will meet for their monthly study on Tuesday, April 14th, at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall. The WIC has been studying Charles Swindoll’s Esther: a woman of strength and dignity; copies are available if you need one.
  • Stated Session Meeting: The Session will meet for its stated February meeting on Tuesday, April 21st, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor.
  • Communion Sunday: On Sunday, April 26th, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper together.

Announcements for February 2009

  • Guest Preacher: Rev. Doug Barcroft will join us for worship on Sunday, February 1, while Pastor Ed is away.
  • February Carry-In: Our Carry-In dinner for February will be on Sunday, February 8, immediately following worship. If you are able, please bring a dish with enough food for your household plus one or two more people. See you then!
  • February Wednesday Night schedule: Wednesdays at HWPC will continue through the whole month of February, except the last Wednesday (see below)-- please plan to join us as we share in the fellowship of prayer meetings, fellowship suppers, and Bible study.
  • Valentine’s Party: All children are invited to gather on Saturday, February 7th, at 3pm for a Valentine-making party!
  • WIC Monthly Book Study: the Women in the Church (WIC) will meet for their monthly study on Tuesday, February 10th, at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall. The WIC has been studying Charles Swindoll’s Esther: a woman of strength and dignity; copies are available if you need one.

  • Ash Wednesday: Wednesday, February 25th is Ash Wednesday; instead of our regular Bible Study, we will have a brief Ash Wednesday Service following our regular fellowship meal.

Announcements for January 2009

  • Called Session Meeting: there will be a called meeting of the Session with the Diaconate on Tuesday, January 6, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss the 2009 budget, other financial matters, and some upcoming dates.
  • January Carry-In: Our Carry-In dinner for December will be on Sunday, January 11, immediately following worship. If you are able, please bring a dish with enough food for your household plus one or two more people. See you then!
  • January Wednesday Night schedule: Wednesdays at HWPC will resume on January 14th-- please plan to join us as we resume our prayer meetings, fellowship suppers, and Bible study.

  • WIC Prayer Pal Breakfast: the Women in the Church (WIC) will have a breakfast for the Prayer Pals on Sunday, January 18th, before Sunday School (at 9:30am).
  • WIC Officer Installation: the officers of the Women in the Church (WIC) for 2009 will be installed on Sunday, January 18th, during the morning worship service.
  • Stated Session Meeting: The Session will meet for its stated December meeting on Tuesday, January 20th, at 7pm in the Fireside Parlor.
